Understanding Overseas Qualifications

Day 1 – PHILIPPINES and SRI LANKA

The education system in the Philippines has recently undergone massive reforms.  These have extended the school system from 10 to 12 years, with a resultant knock-on effect on the tertiary system. The changes have been met with controversy and divided opinion in the Philippines, but have important ramifications from an admissions point of view in Australia with the introduction of a 12-year school qualification.  All these changes and options going forward will be examined in detail.

Sri Lanka falls into the top 10 markets of international students in Australia.  It has a stable education system that is well regarded, but can be confusing from an admissions point of view, especially at school-leaving level.  The school-leaving qualifications at both O and A Level will be examined in detail, shedding light on the differences with the conventional O and A Level qualifications we are used to seeing from other countries.  At tertiary level, Sri Lanka has a mobile student population, especially since the country cannot absorb the local demand for undergraduate education. This results in large numbers going abroad for study, with Australia being the leading study destination.

This seminar will cover the following comprehensively for each country:

  • Illuminating information on the education system in general
  • School-leaving qualification – structure, quality and entry to higher education
  • Post-secondary options
  • Higher education institutions in each country
  • Undergraduate qualifications – structure and characteristics of Bachelor degrees
  • Graduate qualifications – structure and characteristics of Master and Doctoral degrees
  • Recent changes and updates
